Choosing a plumber

Who is the best plumber in Frome?

The best plumber in Frome depends on what matters to you. For most people, reliability means someone who answers your enquiry, books you in and turns up when agreed. Look for genuine local reviews, suitable qualifications, insurance and clear pricing.

Brûler is a small local firm with a dedicated office team handling enquiries during office hours. We are Gas Safe registered (no. 564226) and OFTEC registered, covering gas, LPG, oil, air source heat pumps, solar thermal and light commercial boilers up to 100kW. We keep a history of work at your address, so our engineer can understand your system. We have served Frome since 2014.

Check any local plumber for yourself by reading their recent Google reviews and checking their registration for the work you need.

How do I find a reliable plumber near me?

The most reliable way to find a local plumber is word of mouth. Ask neighbours, or check your street or village WhatsApp group. Good plumbers in Frome tend to end up doing several jobs on the same road because one customer recommends them to the next. (Ours are the bright yellow vans, hard to miss.)

If you are searching online for a reliable plumber near me, check four things:

  • Gas Safe registration for any gas work
  • Public liability insurance, so you are covered if something goes wrong
  • Genuine local reviews on Google
  • Whether they also work for commercial clients

That last one is a strong sign. Commercial customers make us prove our public liability insurance and our CHAS health and safety accreditation, and they check it every time a certificate renews. Bruler is fully insured and happy to show any domestic customer the same paperwork. Just ask the office.

How do I check a plumber is Gas Safe registered?

For gas work, check the business and the engineer on the Gas Safe Register, and ask to see the engineer’s current Gas Safe ID card. Brûler’s company registration number is 564226.

Check the expiry date and the work categories listed on the back of the card. Registration does not mean an engineer is qualified for every type of gas appliance: boilers, cookers and gas fires can require different categories.

Gas qualifications alone are not the same as current Gas Safe registration. Make sure the engineer is registered for the business carrying out your job and qualified for the particular work. Our office can help you check the details before your visit.

What is the difference between a plumber and a heating engineer?

A plumber works on water systems, such as taps, pipes, bathrooms and leaks. A heating engineer works on boilers and central heating. An engineer carrying out gas work must be appropriately Gas Safe registered.

A qualified plumber will typically hold plumbing qualifications covering hot and cold water systems. Work on unvented hot water cylinders requires the appropriate additional competence. Being qualified as a plumber does not, on its own, authorise someone to work on gas appliances or gas pipework.

Gas engineers need qualifications and registration covering the appliances they work on. A landlord gas safety check involving a boiler, hob and gas fire needs an engineer qualified for all three.

At Brûler we cover plumbing, gas, oil and central heating under one roof, and allocate an appropriately qualified engineer for your job.

What areas do you cover?

We are based in Frome and cover the surrounding area, including Bath. Tell our office your postcode and the type of work you need so we can confirm whether we can help.

For locations more than roughly 30 minutes away, we generally take on larger projects rather than routine small visits. We occasionally work in Salisbury for larger projects. Travel or mileage charges may apply and will be explained before you book.

Ask whether we cover your postcode

Are you insured, and do you guarantee your work?

Yes. Bruler holds £2 million public liability insurance and all our work is guaranteed for 12 months.

The Worcester Bosch boilers we fit are registered with Worcester and carry a boiler warranty of 10 to 12 years depending on the model. Unvented hot water cylinders we install usually come with a 2-year parts warranty and a 20-year warranty on the cylinder itself.

Who fixes what? If the fault is inside the boiler and not caused by misuse, Worcester Bosch covers it and sends their own engineer. The manufacturer does not cover the rest of your heating system, so that is where our guarantee comes in. For example, if a zone valve we fitted fails six months later, we come back and replace it free of charge.

Proof of insurance is available on request. Our commercial clients ask for it routinely, and domestic customers are welcome to see it too.

Do you work with landlords and letting agents?

Yes. Bruler works with a number of landlords and letting agents across Frome and the surrounding area, covering landlord gas safety certificates booked in advance and reactive work when something breaks or new tenants move in.

Because we have a team rather than one engineer, we can usually respond faster than a sole trader, which matters when a rental property has no heating or hot water.

We understand rental properties need a safe, reliable fix at a sensible cost. Tell us your budget at the start and we will work to it. When quoting for a replacement boiler, we often give two options without being asked, for example a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 8000 with a 12-year warranty and a Greenstar 4000 with a 10-year warranty, usually a few hundred pounds cheaper. You choose the balance of price and warranty that suits the property.

Prices and call-outs

How much does a plumber charge per hour in the UK?

Brûler’s standard hourly rate is £87 including VAT (£72.50 plus VAT). Plumber hourly rates vary by region and by the type of job, so ask what is included when comparing prices.

Some jobs are fixed price rather than hourly, including gas boiler services, oil boiler services and landlord gas safety checks. A mileage charge may apply outside our usual area around Frome. The office will explain the price when you book.

Tell us what needs doing and where you are. We will check the diary and let you know the earliest available appointment.

General plumbing services

Do plumbers charge a call-out fee?

At Brûler, there is no separate call-out fee during normal working hours. You pay our standard rate of £87 per hour including VAT (£72.50 plus VAT) for the time spent. Quotes are free.

Out-of-hours emergency work has a higher hourly rate: £157.20 including VAT (£131 plus VAT) on weekday evenings after 5pm, and £180 including VAT (£150 plus VAT) at weekends and on bank holidays.

Out-of-hours work is subject to engineer availability, and existing customers get priority. If we cannot attend that evening, we will explain the next available appointment, which may be during normal working hours without the emergency premium.

How much does an emergency plumber cost?

Brûler’s out-of-hours emergency rate is £157.20 per hour including VAT (£131 plus VAT) on weekday evenings after 5pm, and £180 per hour including VAT (£150 plus VAT) at weekends and on bank holidays. Weekend work on commercial properties is £222 per hour including VAT (£185 plus VAT).

Most emergency visits are booked as a one-hour slot unless the repair is more involved. Explain the problem when you call so the office can confirm the likely arrangements and charges.

We are a small Frome firm, not a 24-hour call centre. Out-of-hours visits depend on engineer availability, and existing customers come first. During normal hours, same-day or next-day visits may be possible: call to check rather than assume availability.

Boilers and servicing

How much does a new boiler cost?

Combi boiler replacements from Brûler start from £3,360 including VAT (£2,800 plus £560 VAT at 20%) for a straightforward like-for-like replacement in the same location.

We supply and fit Worcester Bosch boilers at different price points, including lower-priced models for homeowners and landlords as well as premium options. The right model depends on your property, hot-water needs and budget. We will confirm the model, what is included and the full installation price in your quote.

What moves the price:

  • Whether your gas pipe is the correct size for the new boiler
  • Whether you already have a scale reducer on the cold mains
  • The model and warranty you choose (some Worcester Bosch models offer 10 or 12 years, subject to terms)
  • The flue: reusing the same route is simplest, while a new vertical flue through the roof needs a lead slate and extra parts
  • Relocating the boiler to a different room
  • Changing system type

Converting a regular boiler with a cylinder upstairs to a combi takes the job from about a day and a half to two and a half or three days, with double the labour and more materials. We supply and fit Worcester Bosch boilers across Frome and the surrounding area.

How much does a boiler service cost?

A standard gas boiler service from Brûler costs £103.20 including VAT (£86 plus VAT), carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. This covers the service itself; any replacement parts or additional work are charged separately and agreed with you.

We also check your system inhibitor, the chemical that helps protect the inside of your radiators and pipes from corrosion. If it needs topping up, we will explain the cost. We can also discuss fitting a carbon monoxide alarm if you do not have one.

Our engineers carry inhibitor and carbon monoxide alarms, so these can often be dealt with during the visit. Boiler replacement parts may need to be ordered.

An annual boiler service is usually a condition of the manufacturer’s warranty. Check your warranty terms and keep a record of servicing. Pensioner discounts are available; ask the office to confirm eligibility and the applicable price when booking.
